‘Birds of Prey’ Cast Cover Total Film Magazine

Total Film Magazine’s upcoming issue features the cast of Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) on their latest cover and you can view the HQ images in the gallery! Check back this Friday for the full interview with the cast (including Mary!!) and more photos!

Speaking to the magazine, Margot Robbie (who plays Harley Quinn), explains how BoP doesn’t tie in to 2016’s Suicide Squad:

“It’s very much like the comic books where you pick up in a totally different place, and it doesn’t directly link to what happened before,” Robbie tells our sister publication Total Film magazine . “But at the same time it’s not such a leap that you’re like, ‘Oh, what’s going on?!'”

Director Cathy Yan adds that Birds of Prey is “definitely a standalone movie” with fleeting connections to Suicide Squad, such as Harley having the same mallet. “It was really fun to create our own movie, and to not feel like it had to be a sequel or a continuation of Suicide Squad,” she says.

As for if Birds will have a  connection to the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel set for 2021, Margot said this:

“Tonally, David Ayer’s world looks different to [Birds’] world, which will look different to James’s world,” she says. “So, no, there’s not a direct connection. But like the comics, it doesn’t cancel out one or the other.”

Margot also said she really enjoyed working with her female co-stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rosie Perez, Ella Jay Basco and [director] Cathy Yan:

We bonded in a different way. I think that there was an immediate understanding between the women. We could all recognise that, ‘This is sick. We’re the chicks, and we get to do this shit. This is awesome.’”

That ready-made connection may be crucial to the movie’s success, and it’s one Robbie said was already present early on: “We didn’t really need to work at finding a bond, because we kind of all clicked to begin with. And we also did chemistry reads beforehand. So we all bounced off each other quickly and easily.”

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) hits theaters on February 7, 2020.

Latest ‘Birds of Prey’ Trailer and News

A couple of news items have been released ever since Mary along with the Birds of Prey cast hit CCXP in Brazil last week. First up (and most importantly), yesterday at last night’s video game awards, a TV spot was shown for the upcoming film that hits theaters on February 7 and you can watch that clip below:

Also, Margot Robbie spoke with Collider on how the film came to be while on the set of 2016’s Suicide Squad:

“Harley does so much better when she has people to play with.’ I kept thinking that in real life I had such a girl gang, like my group of girlfriends, and I just want Harley to have a girl gang. It really started with Huntress. I just loved Huntress, and with my initial pitch on the story, I said I wanted to keep it quite contained, get no bigger, and no world-ending stakes. Like the stakes were as big as perhaps mafia level or gang level. That’s when I started reading a lot of Huntress comics, obviously coming from a mafia family, and found her story. Plus, I always gravitate… well, not always, but I do often gravitate towards a revenge story because it is so straight forward, but you are so clearly motivated.”

In other news, Birds of Prey is IMDB’s top choice for the most anticipated film of 2020 according to The Wrap.

New Mary Interview in Total Film

Total Film magazine was on the set of Gemini Man last year and during their visit, they managed to snag Mary for a quick Q&A. In the interview, Mary describes her character and how she meets Will’s character Henry, how much she enjoyed playing the role of DIA agent Danny and how Ang Lee described his vision of the film to her. You can read all about it as I’ve uploaded all the scans into the gallery!

Mary was also asked about Birds of Prey and she said the following:

“You can expect something really fun and a bit wild and totally unique. Everyday we were there, we were doing something that just felt really weird and funny and unlike anything else I’ve ever seen before in this genre. It was incredibly exciting to get to do that. We really got to work. We just played, and we had fun.”

First ‘Gemini Man’ Interview

German website filmstarts.de sat down with Mary on the set of’ Gemini Man earlier this year where they talked about the movie. I have copy/pasted and translated the entire interview for all of you to checkout with the rest of it under the cut.

FILMSTARTS: What made you particularly excited about “Gemini Man”?

Mary Elizabeth Winstead: Oh, there are many things. It’s just a fantastic, rare opportunity to make a big, fun and entertaining action movie that has a heart and says something. The film asks questions about life, aging and aging, it is about existential crises. Of course I still have the chance to work with Ang Lee. I was so excited to meet him and to audition. And now I’m allowed to work with him. The combination of Ang and Will Smith, the role and the dimension of the film are terribly exciting for me.

FILMSTARTS: Can you tell us something about the scene you are currently shooting and watching?

Mary Elizabeth Winstead:Naturally. You are really lucky. We are now shooting the first proper week of action and weapons, which is the climax of the movie. It’s going to be dangerous to Will’s character Henry. We are going to flee, but we do not know who we are. This is true for most of the film, but it is becoming clearer and clearer that we are running away from our own organization for which we are actually working. This raises a lot of questions that the characters pose about themselves. Henry is already beyond this point. He is a bit dulled and disillusioned with life and his work, while my character clings to the old ideals of what it means to work for the government and the country. And also to have the pride. She wants to find out what the government really does and why she is chasing this innocent man. That makes them question everything. We’re just trying to survive while the hunters are trying hard to kill us.

FILMSTARTS: The genre cinema is found in your filmography again and again. What motivates you to shoot these films?

Mary Elizabeth Winstead: I just like this physical game, that’s exciting for me. I like characters who know what to do to survive in a dangerous situation. I’ve done horror and sci-fi movies so far and just a few action movies like ” Die Hard 4.0 ” or something. But not so many. This action-drama terrain here is new to me. It’s really refreshing to play someone who knows how to survive and is not just some love interest. That’s why I enjoy finding genre pieces like this, where there are not as many genre stereotypes as you’d expect. I find that very satisfying.
