Mary Appearing at EW’s Capetown Festival

It’s just been revealed that Mary and her Scott Pilgrim Vs the World co-star Jason Schwartzman as well as director Edgar Wright & creator Bryan Lee O’Malley will be appearing at the EW Capetown Festival on May 1st, screening ‘Shaun Of The Dead’ & ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’ at the fabulous Egyptian Theatre.

MEW and the rest of cast will be there for a post-screening Q&A. Details are as follows:

The Entertainment Weekly CapeTown Film Fest makes its debut April 30 in conjunction with American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. Join EW experts like Geoff Boucher and Jeff Jensen for some of your favorite films of the last 30 years followed by Q&As with special guests including John Carpenter, Terry Gilliam, Leonard Nimoy, Kurt Russell, Noah Wyle and others.

The Shaun of the Dead screening will begin at 7:30 PM with a post Q&A session with Edgar Wright and Scott Pilgrim will be at 10:30 pm.

Mary Talks Filming Action Scenes and The Avengers in New Interview

In a new interview with AsiaOne, Mary discussed missing out on action scenes in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and about screen-testing as SHIELD agent Maria Hill for The Avengers. I’ve posted part of the interview, the rest can be read by clicking the link above:

Winstead, who is best known for her performances in Quentin Tarantino’s cult hit, Death Proof (2007), graphic novel-adaptation Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (2010) and last year’s sci-fi flick The Thing, is far from pleased about the “relative ease” she enjoyed in her role as Abraham Lincoln’s wife, Mary Todd Lincoln.

“I’m actually very jealous,” said the North Carolina native with a laugh, during a round table interview with reporters at The Ritz-Carlton Central Park.

“When I first signed on to do this movie, I was happy to take a break from action, as I had just finished Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, for which I did three months of martial arts training.

“Then, one day, I saw people doing stunts on set and I was like, ‘Oh man, I wish I could be one of them!’

“I remember I had a particular scene with Erin (Wasson) where she did a flip backwards…Right then, I was trying to stand up in my seat, because I wanted to do that too.”

On missing out playing the role of Agent Maria Hill in The Avengers, which went to Cobie Smulders:

“It was a matter of timing,” she explained.”At that time (during casting of The Avengers), I was more excited to find something small, which I felt would be the right type of project for me. So I did (indie flick) Smashed and it went to the Sundance Film Festival and got really good reviews.”

Mary also talked a little bit about her marriage towards the end, and about her new moves we’ll be seeing in an upcoming movie:

“I’m in this new movie where I have a small kick-boxing scene,” she said.

“After I made my moves, everyone was visibly surprised…Some asked me, ‘how did you know how to do that?'”

Mary Discusses ALVH and Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan Role

In a new interview with Film School Rejects, Mary talks about Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, the appreciation fans have for Scott Pilgrim Vs the World and her role in Roman Coppola’s A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III. So, when you read a passage detailing a vampire throwing a horse, is that the sign-me-up moment?

Oh my God, that scene is insane [Laughs]. Most of those scenes I had no concept of what they were going to look like, since I wasn’t even there when they were shooting them. I was blown away when I saw that for the first time. You do think, “I have no idea how they’re going to do that and I have no idea how that’s going to look,” but that’s kind of exciting. There’s a mystery factor to it.

You do have the makeup challenge, though. To what degree do you have to readjust how you act?

You do have to do that a little bit. It’s harder to be expressive, because you got so much stuff on your face it can be hard to make facial expressions. That’s a bit of a challenge. At the same time, it added so much for me, because I didn’t know how I was going to play someone about 20 years older than me. As soon as they put the aging makeup on, it became easier and made more sense. Naturally it just became easier.

Roman Coppola made A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III sound pretty surreal. How do you describe that movie?

It’s basically about this man going through a bit of a crisis, and it’s shown through his perspective and what’s going on in his head. He’s quite imaginative. It takes place in the 70s, but it’s highly-influenced by 1930s musicals. There’s a lot of musical numbers, fantastical set pieces, and things like that. It’s very whimsical and sweet.

Did all that call for a more heightened performance?

Well, it’s always different, and it depends on what it is. This one was so heightened that you had to go over the top and have fun with it. I’m in a fantasy sequence where I play this dominatrix military type of office, calling out commands to other women. In his head, that’s what he thinks women are like when men aren’t around. Of course, he’s totally wrong and it’s totally ridiculous. You just have to go with it and chew the scenery.

Mary Talks A Good Day to Die Hard and Scott Pilgrim Sequel

During today’s press junket for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, RamaScreen was one of the many people invited to the event and they had the opportunity to ask Mary about whether she’d appear in Die Hard 5 AKA A Good Day to Die Hard.

Now as you know, the fifth installment is on its way and it focuses on John and his son in Europe. But I asked Mary if she’s taking part in this installment, if we’d see Lucy McClane at in A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD. The following is her brief answer…

“It’s possible, I can’t say for sure. I actually don’t know at this point but it’s a possibility.”

Of course, nothing is confirmed now, but she could always make a cameo appearance. Better than nothing I suppose.

She was also asked of a possible Scott Pilgrim sequel and said it’s not going to happen.

“I don’t think so. I don’t think that’ll ever happen unfortunately. It got a growing fanbase and people are still watching it and that’s really great but I don’t foresee a sequel”

Bryan Lee O’Malley Talks Scott Pilgrim Character Lists

Back in August of 2010 while Mary was promoting Scott Pilgrim Vs the World during one of her interviews during Comic-Con, Mary (& I think a few of the other actors too) had revealed that they had all received a list of ten facts about their character that wasn’t in the books or the film.

At the time, Mary explained:

It was just a lot about her childhood and her relationships that aren’t talked about in the books and the movie that kind of shaped who she is. And it made me understand what a sort of sad character she is at the core and not so much bad-ass and mysterious and cool so much as just guarded because she’s been through a lot of…you know.

New Interview of Mary in the Sydney Morning Herald

The Sydney Morning Herald has released a new interview with Mary where they talk about her career including questions about The Thing, Scott Pilgrim, AL:VH, Smashed and doing theatre. You can read the full interview at the link above, but below are some of the questions asked about ALVH and future projects:

You’ve just finished shooting another film, Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter. What can you tell us about it?

It’s the story of Abraham Lincoln, the historically accurate story of his life from childhood up through the Civil War and the assassination. But it weaves in this completely fictional account of the vampires and this underworld that existed during this time and basically tells the untold story of Abraham Lincoln, that he was not only a presidential candidate and great president, but also a bad-ass vampire hunter and killer.

And you’re also appearing in Smashed, which is getting early awards talk.

I’ve been hearing those kind of things. I of course would never expect those kind of things, because if you expect those kind of things you’re building it up for disappointment. Just the fact that anyone’s even mentioned that it could possibly be part of awards season is incredible in and of itself. And just the wonderful things the critics at Sundance said, even if it ended there I would be so happy. I’m really happy that people responded well to it.

So are you sticking to smaller stuff?

Just for a little while. It feels like the right thing. I want to keep doing that for the time being. There’s a couple of films that I’m about to sign on to, or things are close, that are both very small independent type movies. I think at a certain point I’ll be ready to step back into a big studio film, but right now I’m just having fun sticking to the smaller fare.

Over the weekend, Mary attended a midnight screening of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and did a Q&A session with the film’s director Edgar Wright, comic book creator Bryan Lee O’Malley, co-writer Michael Bacall, and actors Thomas Jane and Clifton Collins Jr. (Vegan Police!)

Mary Presenting at Tonight’s Scream Awards

Scott Pilgrim VS The World has received 8 nominations at this year’s SPIKE TV’s SCREAM Awards. The categories include:

Best Director– Edgar Wright

Best SCREAM-Play–Scott Pilgrim VS The World

Best Villain– All of Ramona’s seven evil exes

Best Supporting Actress– Ellen Wong (Knives)

Best Supporting Actor- Kieran Culkin (Wallace Wells)

Fight Scene of the Year– The final fight scene between Michael Cera, Ellen Wong and Jason Schwartzman in Scott Pilgrim

Best Comic Book Movie– Scott Pilgrim Vs The World

The Ultimate SCREAM– Scott Pilgrim Vs the World

While I think part of the nominations list is ridiculous, partly because Mary wasn’t even remotely nominated and the film didn’t get more nominations where it should have, I still think we should all try our best to vote everyday and help the movie win some, if not all, categories. The film was fantastic in every way.
